How Much is Too Much?

Is there such a thing as too much exercise?

This is a question that was put to me by a friend the other day when I mentioned that I was hoping the rain would hold off so that I could get in a little jogging or bike riding in the evening. I had explained a bit about the program, alternating weightlifting with cardio during the week. My friend noted that I had done weights in the morning and was suggesting that it might be bad to do cardio the same day AND do it again the next morning.

I forgot to mention that this friend is about a hundred pounds overweight and would rather cut off a finger than take a stroll around his block.

I can agree that too much of anything is not a good idea. At my age, I certainly pay attention to what my body tells me when I'm lifting weights or slinging around a kettlebell. I can't recover from injury like I use to and pushing beyond my limits could seriously put me out of action for weeks. Cardio is the same, I suppose. I mean, I don't want to push to exhaustion but I'm finding that my body enjoys the activity. It needs to move. It needs to sweat. The whole point of doing this thing is to be more active...after all.

I dunno. Still....how do you answer people who give fitness advice that they obviously do not take themselves?

Without hurting their feelings of course.

There's no way of putting it where it won't hurt his feelings or somehow insult him.

Just smile and nod. and do whatever you want.

You could send him a link to your blog - this post in particular. ;)

When they offer advice, ask them (nicely and with genuine interest) how it's working for them. If they're honest with themselves, they'll probably shut up right then.

Jay,

I agree there is a thing such as too much exercise. In fact, today my trainer sent me a note with a caution not to overtrain.

In less you are doing your lifting and cardio to excess I don't see an issue with it. Perhaps if we were training for the olympics it would be another issue but we are just regular guys trying to stay healthy. Use it or lose it.

As far as an answer to these people that give advice, just a smile and a thank you is all that is required. There may be no connection in their mind between how they appear and the advice they feel compelled to give.

jennifer...you're probably right

jr...I know for a fact that he doesn't do internet, he probably doesn't even know what a blog is much less that I have one. That's why I felt okay writing about this. I really don't want to hurt his feelings though he irritates me with his "advice".

hops....I do that with complete strangers at the gym who feel obliged to offer me advice that they themselves are not willing to follow. It pisses them off, but who cares.

terry...I agree, use it or wave bye bye to it. And you are right about advice; I don't have to take it, but that doesn't mean I have to reject the person giving it.
